DESCRIPTION:

Health can be defined as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. The diversity of health-related scenarios in Brazil demands the establishment of equally differentiated and adapted strategies for each region and each case. Under this project, studies will be carried out, ranging from neglected diseases such as tuberculosis and intestinal parasitoses, to the development of new therapeutic alternatives for infectious diseases or not, to assess the impact of pollutants on human health. Strategies for controlling epidemics and endemics typical of port regions and / or related to social fragility, such as AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, will also be considered, and other issues of local relevance such as mental health, drug addiction and prison health will be considered. In addition, genetic diversity studies of infectious agents will allow the identification of eventual entry into the country of exogenous strains, a risk inherent in port regions, as well as the monitoring of possible clonal dispersion of more virulent and antibiotic resistant strains. In an integrated way with other objectives, it will also seek to prospect, in the immense marine biodiversity, the potential of production of new drugs. This project also aims to minimize human vulnerability to climate change and the sustainability of socio-environmental health, especially the possible effects on the living conditions and expansion of the area of coverage of tropical diseases to subtropical regions. In this sense, this project will promote the training of highly qualified human resources, through the exchange of academic personnel and the accomplishment of missions to centers of excellence focused on the areas listed above. The missions will focus mainly on learning new methodologies and advanced analytical techniques, and on interpreting unprecedented results. This initiative is crucial to increase efficiency in diagnosis, prevention and control of diseases and diseases affecting human health and quality of life in coastal ecosystems.
