The Astral - All Atlantic Ocean Sustainable, Profitable and Resilient Aquaculture project aims to develop new technologies for aquaculture that make it, at the same time, more profitable and more sustainable across the entire Atlantic Ocean. The EU-funded ASTRAL project will develop integrated multi-trophic production chains (IMTA) for Atlantic markets. In IMTA aquaculture, several aquatic species of different trophic levels are grown together. Thus, waste from one species can be used as an input (fertilizer and food) for another.

Recognized worldwide for its research on bioflocs and computer systems, FURG will actively participate in the Astral project. Led by the Norwegian research center Norce, the project has the participation of 17 institutions spread across different countries. They are centers of research and technology-based enterprises in Spain, France, England, South Africa, Ireland, Portugal, Nigeria and Argentina, in addition to Brazil, with FURG.
